Five New Year's Resolutions For A Sustainable Life
A fresh new year is the perfect time to think about a fresh new start. You do not have to have lots of money or many opportunities to be able to make real and sustainable change in your life. Here are five resolutions you can make right now to make sure that you can live the best life possible and make this world a better place:
1. Buy Fewer New Items
Sometimes, doing good is about doing less, not more. Mass consumerism is a great evil in this world. Instead of buying lots of different things without thinking about their cost to the planet, you should make a new year's resolution to purchase only things you really love and really need. You should live by the mantra that everything in your home should be something you know to be useful or believe to be beautiful, preferably both. Before buying anything new, think about how you might be able to restore an old item or buy something lovely pre-loved. Take a leaf out of our book and Love Restored. Annie Sloan Chalk Paint is great affordable way to change the look of an old piece of furniture. A 1 litre tin of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint costs £18.95 and from this you can paint at least 5 projects. Add your wax at £8.95 and for £27.90 and some of your own time you can save a lot of money and the planet.
2. Reduce Waste
Reducing, re-using and recycling are all important elements in reducing the amount of waste that is sent to landfill. Make it your goal for a more sustainable 2017 to move as close to a zero waste lifestyle as possible. Cook from scratch and consider how to reduce the food packaging you bring into your home. Consider giving things away, repairing them or giving them new life before you relegate them to the scrap heap.
3. Consider The Source
You will inevitably have to buy some things. But when you do, you should make it your aim for the year to always think about where the things you buy have come from and what it has cost to get them to you. Consider the source for all the food you eat, the clothes you wear and the electronic items you buy and think about how you might reduce your burden on the planet.
4. Grow Your Own
One great, low cost and easy way to reduce your impact on the planet is to grow at least some of your own food. This winter, plan ahead and think about how you can make the most of your space to grow some food for you and your family. If you have a garden, create a vegetable plot or a forest garden. Even in a small outside space, vertical gardening can maximise the things you can grow. If you only have windowsills, you may still be able to grow herbs and salads – so why not be creative and do what you can to grow your own in 2017? Greener Kirkcaldy have lots of great ideas and advice to help you grow your own and they are situated just along the road from our very own shop in the High Street in Kirkcaldy.
5. Engage, Collaborate, Vote
You do not have to try alone either. If you have little suitable growing space, why not consider community garden options or see whether you can get an allotment? Love Restored works with the help of the local community and has the desire for a sustainable community at its heart. Why not take one of our Annie Sloan Chalk Paint workshops to learn valuable skills – or pass on skills you have to others around you? Challenge yourself to live a more engaged and collaborative life in your community. Be aware of what is going on in the world, and vote on local and wider issues to make your voice heard. All of these things can make both you and your community more vibrant and more sustainable.
HERE AT LOVE RESTORED WE WISH EVERYONE A REALLY HAPPY NEW YEAR!
